Community Arts Projects

To promote strong communities the Department and service providers operating in the neighbourhood are getting together with the community to undertake some vibrant community art projects.

Youth Dance Project

A Department of Housing Brownlie Community Regeneration Project in partnership with City of Canning.

Producing a dance/music performance with the young people of the Bentley Youth Centre over 11 weeks to culminate in a performance piece that showcases their talents at the proposed Harmony Day celebrations in March 2010.

Community spirit is higher in areas where there is a greater sense of local ownership and participation within community life. As part of the community regeneration plans and small community wins for the Brownlie area, we propose to facilitate a Youth Dance and Music Project. Through consultation with Kiwa Neha, the Community Youth Worker at the Bentley Youth Centre, music and dance interests were identified as strong interests amongst the young people frequenting the centre.

Justina Smith has been asked to artistically lead and choreograph the project. She is a young Indigenous choreographer with a background in traditional Aboriginal and African dance and dance theatre. She includes a wide variety of dance styles into her work and has been successful working with young people in building a pride in expressing the unique person that they are.

Objectives of the project:

  1. Through the medium of dance and music, build upon the strengths and local talents of the young people of the Brownlie area
  1. Build a greater sense of self esteem and belonging
  1. Explore their own cultural background and integrate their experience into a sense of pride in their identity
  1. Develop a performance routine that can be show cased at the next major community celebration
  1. Aim for sustainable outcomes by building partnerships and up-skilling staff on the ground

Timeframe:

Billboard Project

The community at Brownlie Towers (and soon the youth centre) have completed the first Billboard which has now been erected in Walpole Park.

More fabulous art projects will replace the tired old ‘City Light’ billboards and banners in and around the precinct in early 2010.
