Sharing local stories is an important part of celebrating a community. It is also important to preserve these stories as a living history of people experiences as time goes by and communities face inevitable change.
Archival data and authoritative records only go part of the way to preserving such stories and leads us to seek new ways to capture the heart and essence of places as well as peoples experiences. New multimedia technology provides us the opportunity to capture and preserve peoples experiences and stories for ongoing preservation.
To help us acknowledge our history we have created a Community Stories project to record for posterity your stories, memories, experiences and views about Brownlie.
What is a digital story and what is involved?
A digital story takes the form of a short film displaying personal documents accompanied by a voice recording telling a personal story.
Generally community members come together to share their memories and stories. Participants are encouraged and helped to develop their stories into first person natives to be audio recorded. The audio recordings are then combined with personal images (old photographs and documents) supplied by participants to create a personal documentary film of about 2 minutes each. Example below:
